Habbo is coming to Web3 in the form of an NFT-based hotel that will debut later this year.

Sulake, a Finnish social entertainment firm that pioneered social gaming and virtual communities in the 2000s, is finally launching a Web3 Habbo server.

Sulake, a Finnish social entertainment and media company, will bring the popular online game Habbo to the metaverse later this year with a fully integrated Web3 server dubbed Hubbo X. This follows Habbo’s announcement in January that NFT functionalities would be added to the platform.

The company, which was founded in 2000, is most known for creating and developing the Habbo and Hotel Hideaway games, both of which were popular online hangouts for teenagers in the early 2000s.

Habbo, a virtual hotel and multiplayer experience where players – represented by personalised avatars – can design rooms, roleplay in organizations, and even buy and sell decorations known as “furni” and other items, existed before metaverse social gaming platforms like Roblox, Decentraland, and The Sandbox.

There are currently approximately 120 million user-generated rooms and 850,000 monthly active members in the nine Habbo language groups.

Habbo revealed its plans to focus on play-to-earn and tokenomics in a game design reveal, where players would be able to buy, own, and resell NFTs issued in-game. Players will also be able to develop their own play-to-earn games and own their virtual spaces and avatars as NFTs.

Habbo X will function as a social hub for the Habbo and NFT communities when it launches. Habbo Turkey, the most recent hotel, opened in 2012 for Turkish speakers.

In a statement, Valtteri Karu, CEO of Sulake, stated, “Habbo has always been at the forefront of establishing virtual communities for social gamers and creators, and we want to pioneer this with the use of the new blockchain technology.” “Our goal is to retain Habbo as a social pioneer of the Web 3.0 metaverse’s limitless possibilities.”

Sulake and the Habbo franchises were purchased by Azerion, a digital entertainment company, in January of last year.

In a statement, Jurriaan van Teunenbroek, vice president of games and content at Azerion, said, “The launch of Habbo X will come as a consequence of our efforts to connect new and existing Habbo inhabitants to the revolutionary capabilities made accessible by Web 3.0 technology.” “With this new technology, we’ll be able to reward our Habbo users and content creators in ways we couldn’t before.”

Habbo, like other early internet platforms, is beginning to recognize the importance of its pre-metaverse status. IMVU, for example, began as an avatar creator on AOL Messenger in 2004, but has since evolved into an avatar social metaverse platform with over 7 million monthly active users.

While Habbo isn’t as popular as it was in the mid-2000s, its participation in Web3 may be able to help it reclaim its previous glory.
