A Gorilla Drives An Old Pony In Space In Hyundai’s Weird NFT Ad

Hyundai is the most recent carmaker to dabble in the odd realm of NFTs. What is a non-financial transaction (NFT)? It’s “a non-interchangeable unit of data kept on a blockchain, a type of digital ledger, that can be sold and traded,” according to Wikipedia. In a nutshell, it’s a type of digital content that has a unique identification and can’t be copied. At least in principle. That makes it valuable to some. Others, on the other hand, aren’t so sure.

We’ll leave the NFT debate to you, the readers, to discuss in the comments. For the time being, all you need to know is that Hyundai is working on its own NFT. Or, at the very least, it appears to be many NFTs, as the automaker is opening dedicated NFT social media accounts on Twitter and Discord. The above video acts as an announcement for the debut of these channels, and Hyundai will release 30 Hyundai X Meta Kongz NFTs on April 20 to commemorate the event. That begs the question: what is a Hyundai X Meta Kongz NFT in the first place?

That’s probably what the video at the top of this page teases. We came to this conclusion for a variety of reasons, the most important of which being that the video is titled Hyundai X Meta Kongz NFT Project. The 54-second short begins with an unmistakable reference to the famous film King Kong, as well as eight-bit visuals from the original Donkey Kong video game. Okay, that’s where Kongz comes from, but things go odd from there.

A classic Hyundai Pony hatchback descends from the skies as the gorilla (who we presume is named Kongz) transforms from eight-bit to modern-day reality. It’s definitely worth noting that the setting for all of this looks like a mix of Tron and Frozen, and just when you think things can’t get any crazier, the car blasts into space with a nod to E.T. before landing on the moon. “Shooting star NFT, dropping shortly,” says the video, which ends with a bizarre crystal-like item on the car’s windshield. Hey, we warned you it was strange.

So, what precisely is the NFT in this situation? That appears to be part of the puzzle. It’s also unclear how to obtain it, as Hyundai simply mentions its new NFT social media outlets. And there’s no way of knowing how much it will cost. However, on April 20, there will reportedly be 30 of them.

Welcome to the strange world of NFTs, my friends. If Hyundai’s work here is any indication, this will not be the brand’s only NFT. It’s also not the first time a major automaker has released an NFT. Will more manufacturers follow suit and enter the digital world? Only time will tell if this is true.
